My niece wanted to share some her chips with them and she said “mah” [here, in Blackfoot]. The supervisor didn’t even wait, and she just slapped her. My dear niece…
Of course, there were many rules. We learned from the others, or we learn by the mistakes that we made, while we were there, and we got punished. I don’t know if the students that were there already, who knew the rules already, might have enjoyed watching us suffer being punished because we didn’t know the rules… but, we weren’t, the rules weren’t shared.
You know as well as I do that after three days, Bologna not sitting in a fridge turns green. That’s what was fed to us on a train, green bologna, and some of the children are hungry but I think that most, most of us probably ate just the peanut butter sandwich and got rid of the rest.
I would ring the bell and wasn’t the time.. And while I sure got to licking after that… It was supposed to be a ceremony of praising God, but I got my lickings after church.
So I had to spend my time in the chapel because the nun said that I deserved the wickedness that I had in my life and that’s how I’m paying for it and that I had to spend it in the chapel. And if they couldn’t put me in the chapel, I was put in the stairwell.

Those times I wanted to run away, I couldn’t because I’m crippled. I don’t get very far. And I remember a time when my brother, and sister ran away together. It was, there was four of them. But my brother and sister they were all caught and brought back…
Not in public but they had the classroom doors open, they had a stool they’re out in the hallway and they put me there and they gave it to me. They had the doors open so other students can hear me cry out.
Things like that happened all… just anytime…
